National Committee Activities

1. e-Drug Discovery Symposium 2003: May 20th-23rd, 2003 in Seoul, Korea.

Four days-running “e-Drug Discovery” Symposium has been held during May 20-23, 2003 in Seoul, Korea. This international event has been jointly organized by the CODATA Korea local member Prof. Kyoung-Tai No and Prof. Mu-Shik Jhon, the Chair of DSAO. It was the most important event in our discipline for the exchange of research and practices in e-drug Discovery, which was covered cutting-edge in-silico drug discovery technologies and also recognized the tremendous potential of Chem-informatics, Virtual Screening, ADME/Toxicology, and Physiome for improving the quality of life in this new paradigm of the digital era. Over twenty internationally recognized outstanding speakers in this area were invited and delivered excellent lectures from the country region of Asia-Oceania. People from universities, research institutes and industry joined together and shared their expertise. The details of Symposium can be found at http://codata.kisti.re.kr/dsao2003/ .

2. Meetings for Bioinformatics - KSBI 2004 and AASBi : November 4-5th, 2004 in Seoul, Korea.

The 3rd Conference of Korean Society for Bioinformatics (KSBI 2004) has scheduled for broad experties in such area, and is going to hold in Korea, Yonsei University from 4 to 5 of November, 2004. This also will be great opportunity for the integration for AASBi (Association of Asian Societies for Bioinformatics) second meeting at the same venue. This event will jointly be organized by the CODATA Korea committee local member Prof. Hong-Gil Nam and Prof. Kyoung-Tai No. It is the most important event in our discipline for the exchange of research and practices in Bioinformatics broadly related in biology.

The subject related to Genomics & Proteomics (Genome data analysis and visualization, Comparative genomics, Genome annotation, Proteomics analysis, Interactive analysis of genomics and proteomics, Microarrays, Structural Genomics etc.); Systems Biology (Metabolome, Physiome, Metabolic pathways network , Signaling pathway network, Genetic network, Cellular model, Tissue model, Organ model, Quantitative analysis, Integrative biological simulation , New simulation algorithm etc.); Medical Informatics (Bioinformatics for clinical genomics, Biomedical informatics, Clinical biochip informatics, Cancer Informatics, Prediction models for prognostic subgroups etc); Chemoinformatics (QSAR (3D QSAR), LBDD, SBDD/Docking, ADME/Tox, Prediction, Library Design/Focused Library, Protein 3D structure prediction); Computation (Statistical Methods, Algorithmic Models, Bayesian Network, Linkage Analysis, Data Management methods and systems, Text mining of biological literature etc) ; Structural Biology (Protein 3D structure Prediction, Protein-Protein interaction (based on structure), Protein/domain/motif classification, Docking etc.)

3. '2004 International Symposium on Computational Biology & Bioinformatics': 26th of November, in Gyeongju Hilton Hotel, Korea

In order to promote international collaboration the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (CCBB) concluded the Memorandum of Understanding with Computational Biology Research Center (CBRC), AIST in Japan. As a part of this cooperation, the '2004 International Symposium on Computational Biology & Bioinformatics' at Gyeongju Hilton Hotel on November 26, 2004 has organized. This meeting has jointly collaborated with CBRC of Japan and Bioinformatics Institute (BII) of Singapore. At this symposium researchers from three leading countries in Asia - Japan, Korea, and Singapore - will present theirs recent results on bioinformatics research. We believe this symposium will be a good opportunity to enhance information & personnel exchange, R&D, and co-work among three countries. More find at url http://www.ccbb.re.kr/symposium/2004_1/index.html

Bioinformatics includes all fields that investigate biology with the assistance of computer. It became an essential research tool in basic biology, medical science and applications of biology, and is strongly related with other science fields like biology, computer science, mathematics, physics, etc. The fruits of bioinformatics research will be key technology at the diagnosis of genetics diseases and developing of new drugs. From these viewpoint bioinformatics is also one of industrially core technologies.

Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (CCBB), KISTI, have been building IT-based bioinformatics infrastructure for Korean biology community and participating in National Genome Information Center (NGIC) since 2001, which is fully supported by Korean Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).

4. KOSTI Workshop 2004: the 9th Korea Science and Technology Infrastructure Workshop; 9-11th of November, KISTI in Daejeon, Korea

From 9th to 11th of November, KISTI organizing the workshop for deep collaboration and promote research activities in total area of IT, KOSTI workshop facilitating the area includes the DB Construction, Information Services, Policies, Supercomputing Application, Cluster Development, HPC network application, research networking, GRID, Bioinformatics Application, Retrieval system. More details find at url http://www.kisti.re.kr/kosti2004/index.htm

5. Achievement of Factual Database Construction and its Service

- Visible Korean Human Database: Another Trial for Databasing the Serially-Sectioned Images of human body http://vkh3.kisti.re.kr

Databasing the Serially-Sectioned Images of Korean Human through the Multilateral Research cooperation amongst medicinal, engineering, photography and computing technology. Since the VKH dataset achieved, the data retrieval is available through the Web and it has implied 3-Dimensional rendering images reconstructed by the stacking of sectioned images, the real-time stereoscopic visualization, Virtual endoscopy and Virtual dissection. Visible Korean Human dataset will be distributed worldwide free of charge

- Plasma Property DB http://fact.kisti.re.kr

Plasma property DB is developed by KISTI and KBSI(Korea Basic Science Institute), KBSI produced the data and KISTI developed the database and retrieval system. We provide users with such information about the chemical reactions promoted by plasma, material characterizations interacted with plasma and atomic or molecular basic data consisting of plasma, for example, the structure of atom or molecule, ionization energy, impact cross section, plasma diffusion coefficient, discharge voltage, spectrum data and so on. We constructed about 3,000 records(on the basis of electron energy 10eV) and are servicing the database with graph or numeric data.

- Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD) http://icsd.kisti.re.kr

KISTI constructed the ICSD database(73,000 records) and developed new web-based information searching system with the use of the data licensed by the FIZ Karlsruhe, Germany. We organize several menus possible to search the structure of crystal in a variety of ways on the web and the search results show not only numerical data of the structure of crystal but also the graphic of X-ray diffraction pattern and the 3-dimension structure of crystal. The data will be updated continuously and the searching system will be improved in order to provide researchers with information easily and swiftly.

- 3D Human Information System http://digitalman.kisti.re.kr

3D human information system is constructed by computer tomography of 50 males and 50 females. Each tomogram was made 1mm apart. Bones of Korean was restored by the tomograms. Those 3D bones restored were re-standardized. Physical model was constructed by performing finite element modeling. We provide users with standardized Korean skeletal model and applied software reflected the characteristics of Korean body.
