The Chinese Academy of Sciences( CAS) joined in CODATA in 1984, as a national member, and organized the Chinese National Committee for CODATA (CN-CODATA or CODATA-China), which comprise 19 members from the CAS, related Ministries, Universities and Commissions. Prof Chen Yiyu, the president of National Natural Science Foundation of China, is the Chairman of the CN-CODATA.

The Committee has established 9 Working Groups since 1986, with the purpose of coordinating the domestic data construction in different branches, as well as organizing relevant international exchanges with foreign CODATA members and organization. The 9 groups respectively concentrate on Fundamental Constants, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Material Properties, Environment, Atomic and Molecular Data, Nuclear Data, Geo-science, Biological Macromolecules, Mechanical and Structure Design.

Currently, its Secretariat is in charge of the construction of CODATA China Physics and Chemistry Database, a special-supported project of fundamental work being sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology.

Main Activities of Chinese National Committee for CODATA

From the beginning of eighties of last century, we began to prepare to join CODATA. And in the meanwhile the CAS started its scientific database project. National Planning Commission and Science & Technology Commission support us.

Based on the database work started, CAS on behalf of China applied to enter into the international CODATA and pay attention to the data organization work

1 Investigate domestic and international data activities and trends for establishing databases on science and technology (S & T). Chinese National Committee for CODATA also undertakes the task of broadcasting the domestic S & T data activities to the world.

2 Organize and host the annual General Assembly of Chinese National Committee for CODATA, with the purpose of discussing its activities, introducing on-going tasks of its data groups, e.g.

• The 14th Meetings of the Chinese National Committee for CODATA was held in Beijing on 16 April. 2002. About 40 participants attended, including CNCODATA new and old members and representatives from Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and Technology, National Natural Science Foundation of China, China Association for Science and Technology and so on.

Some representatives from the organizations concerned made presentations on their activities in S&T data. Outlining and summarizing the tasks of CODATA-China.

3 Push domestic S & T information resources onto the network, to make it more efficient use of the S & T data. http://dc.codata.ac.cn

4 Organize domestic working groups and relevant meetings within different academic spheres: e.g. The 6th National Conference on Scientific Database and Information Technology was held in Lijiang, Yunnan Province on July 2004 with the title “Application and development of scientific database”.

5 Hold regular or irregular domestic and international academic activities. e.g.

• Prof. Shuichi IWATA, President of CODATA, visited the Chinese National Committee during Feb. 28th and Mar. 1st in 2003. And the related academic activities was held.

• Chinese regional meeting of CODATA Gas-hydrate Working Group was held in Beijing on Apr.27th and Apr.28th in 2004. The purpose of this meeting was to discussion on how to promote the project of the construction of gas hydrate information system. About 40 participants attended. Acad. F.A. Kuznetsov, Director, Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Novosibirsk, Russia and Dr.Jean Jacques Royer, Treasurer of the CODATA also participated in the Workshop.

• Chinese National Committee for CODATA , U.S. National Committee for CODATA ,CODATA Task Group on Preservation and Archiving of S&T Data in Developing Countries and Ministry of Science and Technology of China co-hosted “International Workshop on Strategies for Preservation of and Open Access to Scientific Data” on 22-24 June 2004 in Beijing China.

6 Organize participants to attend biennial CODATA International Conferences and relevant Working Meetings.

• Going to attend the Archiving Scientific Data in Asian-Oceanic Country in 2002 Seoul and 2004 Indonesia.

• Organized Chinese scientists participate the 18th International CODATA Conference in Montreal

7 Push forward and sponsor relevant publications.

• Published CODATA Recommended Values of the Fundamental Physical Constants in 2004 in China.

• Began to edit “Nuclide Guide” series, copies in Chinese, English and Russian will be published in Aug. 2004. in China.

8 Initiate, organize some domestic and international programs on scientific database construction and data sharing fields

• to coordinate the project of “CODATA-China Physics and Chemistry Database” sponsored by MOST from 2001 http://dc.cncodata.ac.cn/

9 Help to push the database maker to put their data and database onto the Internet http://www.codata.cn
