As a new resource of energy, research of gas hydrates has become an interested topic for the world science research frontline. China began to attach importance to the research on gas hydrate from the end of 1980s. Since 1990s, organizations like State Oceanic Administration, former Institute of Geology and Mining, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Petroleum Departments and some relevant universities have traced the technologies and analyzed the information of foreign gas hydrate research. In recent years, some research work has been included in the national “863”and “973” programs, issuing some achievements and collecting volumes of data for gas hydrate research. With the purpose of managing and utilizing these data efficiently and sharing the research fruits broadly, China has begun to construct its gas hydrate information system.

In this paper, authors introduce the ideas of constructing information system of gas hydrates in detail. While constructing the gas hydrate information system, the following steps should be taken: to collect and put in order various kind of scientific data; to set up a number of gas hydrate databases by standardizing and integrating the collected data; to build up gas hydrate information system platform using Web Service and Grid Service technologies; to do research and establish a metadata specification of gas hydrates for guiding the database resource construction; to do research on how to control and estimate the quality of gas hydrate data for insuring the authenticity and reliability of the collected data; to set down criteria and policies of gas hydrate data-sharing, with the purpose of establishing a steady operating mechanism for data-sharing and boosting up the exchange of data.
