Just as spreadsheets revolutionized our ability to understand small amounts of data, visualization is revolutionizing the way that we understand large information spaces. Information, unlike physical data, has no natural shape or form. Over the last few years many novel visual metaphors have emerged for representing different classes of information, some of which are obtaining commercial significance.

I will illustrate progress in the field of Information Visualization using several examples, critique a few of the techniques that I have found most to be the most motivating, and describe applications that we have made at Bell labs that are having significant impact.
