papertitle: Antarctic and Southern Ocean data management by the Joint SCAR/COMNAP Committee on Antarctic Data Management (JCADM)

abstract: This presentation will introduce the Joint SCAR/COMNAP Committee on Antarctic Data Management (JCADM) and describe its activities and achievements.
JCADM was established by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP) in 1997, to 'coordinate the development of the Antarctic Data Management System'.
Its main activities are:
- Recruitment and support of new National Antarctic Data Centres (NADC)
- Capacity building
- Building a global inventory of Antarctic and Southern Ocean data set descriptions

Currently 30 nations are involved in JCADM.
This presentation will focus on one of the main achievements of JCADM: the establishment and building of the Antarctic Master Directory, the largest online, searchable data base of Antarctic data set descriptions.
It will also inform about another exciting project with strong JCADM involvement: the compilation of the most comprehensive database of Southern Ocean data, and will address the role of JCADM within the data management activities for the International Polar Year (IPY).
