An Overview of the Chinese Programme on UCG

Abstract: Coal is the dominant source of energy in China. But about 50% of the coal resource is left underground unminedAccording to this status the “Long-tunnel, large-section, two-stage” UCG technology that can recover the abandoned coal resource has been put forward and the UCG model test platform has been builtThe simulation tests of lignite, soft coal and hard coal have been completed and the gasification parameters have been obtained. The tests can produce gas with above 35% hydrogen and heating value about 8.36MJ/m3 and the gasification ratio of coal seam is beyond 75% during the O2-H2O (g) continuous gasification process. Five field trials have been completed, which can produce gas with heating value about 4.18MJ/m3 based on the air continuous gasification. The gas with above 40% hydrogen and heating value above 8.36MJ/m3 is produced at two-stage gasification. The gas not only can be used as fuel gas for direct consumption, but also can be used as power generation and civilian use successfully.

Liang Jie, male, born in 1964, professor and supervisor for doctoral candidates, director of engineering research centre for UCG, review expert of National Natural Science Foundation of China, deputy secretary-general of UCG speciality committee, committeeman of technical panel of many corporations.

researches concern principle of UCG, measuring and controlling technology, technical application, environmental protection and other technologies on UCG, excellent performances in UCG field have been achieved which are well-known at home and abroad.

preside the programs of national high-tech research and development plan (863 plan), national natural science foundation of China, national important project about applying high technology to production, national demonstration engineering project, international cooperation project and so on. Engage in the researches of underground coal gasification (UCG) in abandoned coal resource, deep coal seam, the coal seams with high content of sulfur, ash and gas and that are under building, water and railway of China, and hydrogen making from UCG.. Professor Liang jie has gained four national patents of invention and has one monograph published.

set up the only engineering research laboratory for UCG in China which has been the pattern of industrial UCG with high efficient combination of production, study and research, and has produced great economic and social benefit.
